Openers

Spark:

Many people at Borders or Kino will decide if they like a book or not by only reading the first few lines. The following are some of the most famous openers for books written in the English language:

”It was a bright, cold day in April and the clocks were striking 13.” George Orwell, 1984

“The sky above the port was color of television, tuned to a dead channel.” William Gibson, Neuromancer

“You better not tell nobody but God.” Alice Walker, The Color Purple

“In the town there were two mutes, and they always together.”  Carson McCullers, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

Assignment:

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to capture and motivate your audience through the use of a few well-chosen words.

Details:

By the time the class meets in week 2, you will post to your blog 12 opening sentences. They will be the best you can think of, and they will all be written in the third person and the present tense.  Use the descriptive voice, but don’t add silly words for no reason. Add this to the blog as a page, NOT a post, and make sure it is titled “Openers.”
